The Over-Snow Vehicle Rule and a Backcountry Survey for Californians

If you’re a backcountry user, this is big, real big. For the first time in many years the US Forest Service (USFS) has finally issued what many are calling the most necessary step towards future balance in the backcountry. It’s been close to 10 years since the USFS issued the Travel Management Rule. This rule directs the management of wheeled-vehicle use on USFS lands, but in thinking about winter recreation, the management of snowmobiles has been optional. Groups like the Winter Wildlands Alliance have been working to change this rule, advocating for a national rule that does the same for winter use and it does in the non winter months. Recently, the Over-Snow Vehicle Rule was published in the Federal Register. You can read it here.
